Slomosa
Tundra Rock
MNRK Heavy
Slomosa has coined a new genre of doom/desert rock. Springboarding off of their debut album and over a hundred shows, they look to their frigid Norwegian environment to create glacial riffs.
“A desert doesn’t have to be warm”, observes vocalist/guitarist Ben Berdous. “If you think about it, the biggest desert in the world is Antarctica. In this respect, the tundra is our desert.
This is certainly the case with the opener, “Afghansk.” It beckons early stoner rock in a way the playfully dances with sonic behaviors and sheer volume. With “Rice,” you get exactly what you hope for with this band, powerful composition and drive through instrumental rock paired with complementary vocals from Berdous. It’s where the riff meets tone in an incredible way.
“Red Thundra” continues the sentiment pushing lyrics like a geological shift. What is interesting to point out is that the band does not need epic timing to get to their destination. Most songs venture around the five-minute mark, some even quicker. And actually, my favorite is the last song on the album, the travelog instrumental journey of “Dune.” From the bass accentuating melody to the Middle Eastern Tuatara-like meditation of the acoustic guitars riffing against power chords crashing together like tides. It’s one of the best things Slomosa has done.
Tundra Rock is a great heavy album to easily digest and enjoy.
